If you’re considering a flat panel TV and are having difficulty sorting out all the technical details, you may want to learn about TV lifespan. You may have heard the term used, but did not fully understand its meaning.

Flat panel models use different technology, so the plasma TVs lifespan will be much different than other flat panel LCD TVs.  The lifespan is measure in half-life, which is the amount of time it takes for the TV screen to lose half of its original display brightness. All TVs lose their original brightness, even the old tube models.

While LCD is said to have a longer lifespan than plasma, much of this depends upon the use.  Manufacturers of both LCD and plasma tv models claim long lifespans.  So, if you watch an LCD for eight hours per day, you will probably become tired of it and purchase a new model before it wears out.

The same can be applied to Plasma screens.  The major difference is that this technology relies on plasma gases.  When the gas eventually gets old, it becomes less effective in producing the vivid images.  Manufacturers again claim several thousands of hours of use, in its lifespan.  Much of this depends upon the number of hours you watch TV daily or weekly.

There is no way to replace plasma gases in TVs at this point.  The best way to determine the TVs lifespan is to figure out how much time you spend watching TV every day and compare to the number of hours the manufacturer claims it will last.  There are no special care requirements that will make this technology last longer. Following the manufacturer’s recommended care instructions is the best way to get the most out of your plasma screen. Now that you know how to determine the lifespan, you can make a more well informed decision on your purchase.
