How To Care For Your Wood Worktops

Kitchen wood worktops bring out the splendour and magic of your kitchen. Especially if you are changing to wood from another surface, you will notice that suddenly your kitchen feels like a warmer, more cosy space because of the wooden surfaces. Over time, your solid wood kitchen worktops will age and acquire a patina not found with other types of materials.

If you have a wooden surface, you will find that as the years go by it deepens and darkens with age. Compared to your friends marble tops, your will still be looking like elegant work surfaces where hers will be chipped and dull and scratched.

In order to care for your surface, you only need to be aware of a few tips and techniques to keep it looking in pristine condition. Because it is made of solid wood, if any deep scratches, marks or stains should develop, then it is an easy enough task to have it sanded. This will completely remove the marks and the surface will come up looking just like new.

The first time you receive them, you could cover your work surfaces with a water resistant oil. There are several different ones to choose from and really, which one you choose is down to personal preference. This is a much kinder way to treat your wood than covering them with lacquer and they will develop a deep warm sheen. Popular oils on the market are linseed oil and Danish oil.

The oil must be applied onto the surface itself as a few drops, and then worked in with an old clean cloth. An old shirt or t-shirt is ideal for this because it is soft and lint-free.

Working in the direction of the grain, spread the oil out and rub it in gently to the surface. This provides a clean, water resistant finish. After 15 minutes, rub it over again, in the direction of the grain once more.
